Kirtan Music

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

Kirtan is a devotional practice set to music. It is celebrated using call-and-response song and chant to express loving devotion and happiness. Kirtan means 'praise', we join together as a group in the shared experience of singing, celebration and worship. Kirtan songs are in Sanskrit, which is the ancient language of India. The chants are mantras and channel the energies of the universe through sound vibrations, where each sound has a special meaning and effect on the singer.

Kirtans have a call-and-response style, where one person sings a line, and another repeats it back. This makes it perfect for singing as a group because it means you don’t need to know the words! The celebration is supported with musical instruments such as drums and guitar.

Annapurna (Shonna) & MahaDeva (Mahapurna) (John) are Yoga Acharyas and accomplished musicians who share the practice of Bhakti Yoga (The Yoga of Loving Devotion) through Kirtan—singing the names of the Divine. They are International Presenters, who disseminate the classical teachings of Yoga and Vedanta.
